The land was fertile and untouched by man. But within its tight hold laid veins of gold that beckoned to frontiersmen like a Siren’s song. The soil was overturned; small mining towns rose up amongst the stumps of once majestic pine trees. Only a handful of man became rich from their mining and one such man was Miller P. Torrey, the founder of Torrey Pines.
But who and what came with the greedy miners who pilfered the land as gold fever pulsed through their veins? Swarms of women of ill-repute, sleepers, found their way into the towns selling their wares to anyone who could promise them a life of luxury. And so Torrey Pines came into existence as Miller P. Torrey bedded his wench and later his wife, Elizabeth Torrey.
The little mining town in Northern California flourished as the news of Torrey’s gold discovery made its way across the country. A town of scarcely two dozen people transformed into a city of hundreds, a modern day El Dorado. Shacks were replaced with cabins, the women of the red light districts became wives and mothers.
Today, the coastal town is run by Torrey’s ancestors: men and women who have remained in prominence as judges, sheriffs, deputies, and legislators. The children of less respectable progeny have cast aside their pasts and live amongst the newcomers who flock to the almost Mediterranean climate and panoramic views of the mountains and wildlife surrounding the valley.
What is hidden in Torrey Pines for you?
