For thousands of years men have studied the unknown. Only in the recent hundred years men have dismissed it as nothing more than myths and stories to entertain. What few know is that studies have been made, dating back as far as the medieval period. Only in the late 1900's have there been a few break-throughs.
The test subjects were both humans and animals. Animals who were tested on eventually had the ability to change into humans. Humans developed powers, themselves. Some were unsuccessful; their bodies would reject the changes and destroy itself or they would be driven insane. The ones who were successful were both studied and trained. The lab was located on an uncharted island just of the Georgian coast. It was hidden beneath a church, where of course no one would expect to look.
Then, sometime in the 1960's, the subjects started a riot. Many were killed. The scientists who managed to live fled to the mainland while the remaining subjects went off to live their own life. Some returned to the island and began building a small town there.
Then, about thirty years later, the government were involved. They sent men to capture the escaped subjects. They had yet to know that their new abilities were also genetic, so they seemed to multiply as the subjects started families. For some time they attempted to keep this knowledge of strange powers in humans from the public, but after a couple years (around 2005), a group of these powerful humans who called themselves the "Creatures" sent an attack on a secret government base in the southeast. There were many losses on both sides, but after the battle there was an uproar in the public when they found out. Even those who did not unleash the attack were called "Creatures" and pushed away for their abilities or heritage.
One young man moved to the island to find a sanctuary, a man by the name of Alexander Garnette. He started a boarding school for children who had abilities, a small private school for those who needed a sanctuary. The island itself was a sanctuary for "creatures," as they became known. Most children who had lost their families or ran away stayed at the school. The year, now, is 2020 and while any "creature" in the United States is in danger, those who live on the island live happily and peacefully.
